The photo shows standart situation of my childhood: The member of Lidove Milice (paramilitary group of Czechoslovakian communist party) is showing Czechoslovakian automatic gun Samopal vz-58 to children. No its really not Kalashnikov AK-47. It just looks similar. I remember this seances with the paramilitary groups very well. At this meetings they usually used our child fascination by weapons for the ideologic brainwashing. Looking back it was a bit apocalyptic time. Actually they psychological prepared us for war with the enemies of comunistic society...

...but even that i liked those guns my preferences were for the public enemies! In the 70s and 80s the system controlled all public musical events and becouse totallities did not likes free music so this kind of culture was moved to the underground. The propaganda called independent music as "cultural diversion by the western enemies". When i was child my favourite band was Plastic People of The Universe. It was legendary psychedelic group in Czechoslovakia. They were public enemy number 1 in the music! Cool stuff about Plastic People of the Universe in english is here on Funky Czech-In blog. Two Czech artists - painter, printer, scenographer and musician David Cajthaml and singer Monika Naceva did eighteen minutes remix version of the famous song from Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin created on the occasion of the exhibition In Morbid Colours: Art and the Idea of Decadence in the Bohemian Lands, 1880—1914. This really wonderfull exhibiton I know from Prague. The works such of great czech artists as Max Pirner, H. Schwaiger, Beneš Knüpfer, Gabriel Max, Jakub Schikaneder, František Bílek, Karel Hlaváček, Max Švabinský, Alfons Mucha, Jan Preisler, František Kaván, František Kobliha, Jan Zrzavý, Josef Váchal, Ferdinand Staeger, Alfred Kubin, Emil Filla, Bohumil Kubišta, František Drtikol etc.. Recomend this exhibition!!! Now its until 10/05 / 2009 in Hotel de Ville and Musée Félicien Rops, Namur. Belgium. Curator of the exhibition is Otto M. Urban aka DJ Satan. I have a postcard on my table..Looks like normal postcard of small czech town (Podborany) from early 60s. But after while i found there something not normal, something weird....somethin extraordinary funny weird.....the nude person on the square! Pretty weird postcard from comunistic Czechoslovakia. Its a bit mystery :))) Looks funny or not? :D

well. i had heavy time. i was victim of justice mistake. it was strange and absurd story. there was money, politics, accidents and my person. but story has happy end. for now. it was really scary experience for me. more scary situation that is at the photo whith czech legendary movie person Krtecek enclosed by popes. this photo sent me at the worst time young beautiful hungarian artist "Hajni" Hajnalka Tarr. Thank you for support Hajni! and for now i post one czech underground song from 80`s. it was the time when justice rightness in my country was just in formal form. The song has nice lyrics, say about something like:

After the dark and repressive era during 50`s the liberalization slowly starts in Czechoslovakia society in the early 60`s. The popculture shows it nicely. The fashion starts changing. The cultural isolation starts to have scratches. The impact of the movies, songs and art ideas from the freedom world starts to grow here. The jazz, rock and roll and other music styles become available on the vinyles. Don’t forget - there were no private vinyl or media publishers! The government was the owner of all publishing industry! The changes take place in mentality during 60’s.

And now something really positive (without irony). Year 1957. Dark 50`s is slowly over. John Lennon in Britain established his first band Quarrymen. USSR discoveres space through the satelite Sputnik with the dog named Lajka. The Europe starts The European Community. Many innocent people in Czechoslovakia are still in concentration camps but if you have lucky star, you can sit in luxus hotel, drinking red Campari and listen to vinyl of Karel Vlach and his orchestra.

The time during 50’s was bad for the music and popculture in Czechoslovakia if comparing with the same period in the west. No progress. At that time jazz music was almost banned because the official communistic ideology indicated it as music of imperialism and decadent. Rock and roll and other styles were victimized. Dancing at the rock and roll or jazz party could be the reason for arrest. The government was not only at class war . The government was at war with culture in general. With high culture, with low culture. Only the propagandistic culture had official support. The music celebrated only one truth, one view of life, one view of anything. The borders of the country were closed. The cultural élite and the great spirits of nation were persecuted and arrested. The government had relative success. I think. Masses of people fell for it. The untruth and lying were strong part of communism. Of course the situation was not of same bad level like in Soviet Union. But anyway it was sad and absurd time. The propaganda frequently used word combination: fight for freedom. Here is one sample of classic propagandistic song. The name of the song sounds ironic to me. Jsme za mir – it is means We stand for peace. The fact is that all society behind the iron curtain, esspecially at 50’s was full of military thinking.

This is the some examples from edition of matches labels with CKD Praha theme from my collection. I like there special design. The labels are from 60`s. CKD Praha was one of the largest engineering companies in Czechoslovakia. The company rootage stretches back to the old good Austria-Hungary imperium of 19th century and to the Prague sides Vysocany, Liben and Karlin. CKD (full name is Ceskomoravska Kolben Danek) was established by Emil Kolben and Cenek Danek. Emil Kolben was cooperant with Thomas Alva Edison. He gaped with him after embroilment about direct current and alternate current. He had tragic fortune. Nazis killed him. 26 members of his family were killed too. In 1945 after WW2 company was communized. In 60`s CKD was the bigest producer of trams in the world.
